Are you looking for the chance to discover what scientific research is all about? With the Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada you will have the opportunity to write a research proposal, carry out experiments in a lab, and compete for cash prizes.

Participation in the Edmonton region is open to students currently in Grades 10, 11 and 12. Individuals or teams of 2 students are invited to apply. Your application will be reviewed by an expert panel, just as a grant would be reviewed for researchers applying for money at the University. Successful applicants will be notified in mid-November and matched with a mentor in December. SBCC participants will begin their research in December (or whenever you and lab personnel are available) and must be completed by April.

First place winners from each region compete in the National SBCC held in May!

Why Participate?
Along with a fabulous opportunity to work alongside accomplished mentors and participate in “real-life” research, the SBCC may result in job opportunities or reference letters. Over $6000 in cash prizes are presented to winners at the Edmonton Regional competition to be shared between the winners and their schools.

How do I get involved?
Talk to your high school science teacher about the program or contact the regional coordinator, Anna Noga.  Proposal Deadline is November 10, 2011!

1. Find an idea that interests you in the biotechnology field.  Examples of ideas could come from a disease that has touched your family, news about problems plaguing the agricultural community or concern and questions about the environment.  For an overview of the biotechnology field, check out the BioAlberta website.

2. Figure out what question you would like to answer through your research project. Find out what research is being done in Edmonton. For more ideas on possible projects or information on biotechnology research that is being done in Edmonton, check out the links at the bottom of this page.

Is there a lab doing research that your idea would fit with? Contact the researcher and let them know that you are interested in the SBCC and what the competition entails. Explain the research topic you are interested in and ask them for help or if they would like to be your mentor for the SBCC program (keep in mind that this is a part time research project that must be finished by early April).

3. Follow the links from the SBCC home page for the online application. There you will find some helpful hints and guidelines on how to develop and write a proposal.

4. Write and submit your proposal on-line by the deadline
